Trevor Payne - Coach and Athlete Ambassador
Please tell us about sporting events you have taken part in or have coming up. Sell yourself, this is your page :)
The sporting events that I have in the near future are a couple of 100-mile time trials, but as a semi-retired athlete who now focuses on the coaching and rehabilitation of athletes, I am focusing on keeping them fit for the upcoming Commonwealth Games and the upcoming European Long course triathlon champs, along with other championship events and an arctic expedition.
Tell us about your journey to fitness? Where did it all start?
It all started in 1989 in Hong Kong when I discovered a passion for running. With the help of great advice from my mentor at the time, I quickly rose through the ranks and raced in many national and international (Australasian) 10km and then Marathon races (PB of 2:19:47 for the marathon). I then took up triathlon, and knowing that I was better over distance, I started with the 70.3 distance building up to the Ironman event where I pb'd with 2 hrs 29 mins. I have also raced ultramarathons (100 milers) in this country but mainly abroad and distance cycling events.
If you are interested in getting into Triathlon, Sundried's kit is suitable for beginners as well as seasoned athletes. We have both men's and women's options available.
What are your training goals now?
My goals for the future are in 100 mile time trials.
Tell us one unusual fact we wouldn’t know about you:
I wanted to be an Archaeologist.
What advice do you wish you'd been given when you first started out?
How sleep affects your performance!
Do you follow a specific nutrition plan? If so, what/when do you eat?
Right now I eat what I want, but I try to keep it healthy.
What do you do to keep your clients motivated? Do you have any top tips to keep motivated?
I know it's cheesy but I always remind my athletes why they started, that usually keeps them motivated to carry on with their journey.
Talk us through your training regime.
No set regime at the moment as I’m not racing at a level that requires much structure, so I'm riding twice a week (50 miles each ride) and running three times a week (about 8-10 miles each run), and strength training three times a week.
How do you keep your fitness knowledge up to date?
As a clinician and coach, I constantly stay on top of all the latest medical/rehab literature and current coaching trends. I have a number of championship winners and an Olympic gold medallist along with a couple of world record holders. So I think I have a good system.
What are your top 3 trainer tips?
- Eat properly
- Get adequate sleep
- Listen to your body
If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I probably wouldn’t live for long but I really love mushrooms!
