Incredible Cycling Stories
We all know the feeling of just going through the motions of a long ride just to get the miles in. But sometimes amazing things can happen while out cycling. We asked the cyclists of Reddit "whats the craziest thing that's ever happened to you while out riding?" These were the best responses.
What's the craziest thing that's ever happened to you while out riding?
"I raced a cow. Turns out cows are pretty fast when they feel like it."
"My friend and I were riding on a somewhat rural road, and a car of teenagers drove up and were driving alongside us. The one in the front-seat passenger rolled down his window and stuck his head out, and yelled "DO YOU WANT SOME.... POTATOOEEEES" and he poured a big box of potatoes right in front of us. I didn't know whether to be really upset or to laugh."

"Scariest: Riding through the access roads in the Meadowlands landfill before dawn on a Sunday. (Landfill is closed now.) Both sides of the road are lined with 7' tall marsh grass. All of a sudden a raccoon runs out of the grass, right at me. I get the thought "this is how I die. Crash at 20 MPH and mauled to death by an angry trash panda in a deserted landfill." Little bastard makes it between my wheels without getting hit and runs into the grass on the other side.
Most exhilarating: 4 point buck jumps out in front of me on the local bike trail. Dawn in July. He starts running away from me on the edge of the trail, and I chase him for about a half mile until he breaks back into the bush. (He topped out at 22 MPH.)
Most fun: biking home from work, climbing up 180th St. In Manhattan towards the GWB. This guy pulls up next to me and starts coaching / shouting encouragements. I stand up and start sprinting, and he stays with me for 2 blocks until we get to the light at Fort Washington. High Five, and we go on our separate ways.
Most freeing: I'd ridden exclusively on bike trails. There's a nice one near my house, 16 mile loop. Thanksgiving morning, 2 years ago, I go out on the streets and just ride instead of taking the trail. That snapped it, and I'm going further and further, exploring everywhere I can."
"My buddy hit a car that pulled out in front of him. Somehow he popped up in the air and landed on his feet on the other side of the car."
"Going through a cliff face road in Japan, saw a huge monkey just chilling out on the edge of the cliff, just staring at me."
